A WORD FROM CODIE HENVILLE (founder)...
Throughout my whole life I have lived, studied and worked within regional Australia. Through an immediate family member undergoing cancer treatment while I was 6 years old then again when I was 18 exposed me to the rural medical scene early on in my life. Support for someone going through cancer treatment was accepted and sought after within the rural community. Though once the recovery of the treatment of cancer had come to the end, this family member became mentally unstable and required care , they had treated the cancer but overlooked to treat the mind.
Mental health within our community was very rarely discussed nor did many reach out in the fear of the judgement a small close nit community can have, no one wants to be seen as different . The situation for myself all got too much and in the end I had to escape, my own body was shutting down. I drove myself 600km to Perth 3 days after my 23rd Birthday to self-admit myself into a mental ward, my options where very limited. There I was treated for anxiety, depression and PTSD. It wasn’t until then I fully understood the impact the lack of social acceptance and value we place on mental health had on our rural community.
After been discharged from hospital I made it my life goal to help our communities to place a value on mental health and slowly break down the stigma within rural, remote and regional Australia.
That is my own personal story of how Diamonds in the Rough was born, from little things big things grow. So please join me and unite together to BREAK THE STIGMA + KICK UP THE DUST
